File Saving & THAWSPACE:
Save and save often! It is the mantra!! No one wants to loose all the work they have put into the file/document/presentation, so it is highly recommended for work to be saved on a regular basis. In order to protect the privacy of patrons, integrity of the machines, and security for both the publicly accessed machines in the Lab are erased on reboot. This means all files and machine modifications are erased anytime the machine restarts. Alternatively, there is a designated THAWSPACE that does not get erased on reboot. This space is for temporary storage of work while using the machine. Therefore, when using the machine it is the best practice to save any files to the thawspace drive. Files saved anywhere else on the machine will be erased on a reboot.
So remember save and save often just make sure you save in thawspace!
Lab Customer Service Representatives (CSRs):
The lab is staffed with student workers who provide basic assistance for customers in the lab. The Lab CSRs will assist or train users with:
-
Checking in/out
-
Starting a workstation
-
Choosing an application
-
Loading an application
-
Basic functions: print, save
-
How to answer questions with online help or manuals
CSRs may NOT touch keyboards when providing assistance.
CSRs are NOT subject tutors.
CSRs are NOT to do work for Lab Patrons.
While some CSRs working in the Willis Lab may be extensively familiar with a specific software package, other CSRs may not be able to answer all of your questions. They are students too. Any additional assistance you receive, outside of the functions listed above, are skills unique to that CSR. Do not expect all CSRs to have the same level of expertise. Keep in mind that the CSRs must assist all the students in the lab, which can be up to 40 patrons. Also, remember CSRs are required to assist patrons with the basics (bulleted items listed above) prior to addressing more in depth questions. You may be able to answer your own question via Online Help. Most software packages have an online help section with the entire User's Manual online for you to use. Several sections include easy to follow examples and demonstrations on how to format, use functions, or wizard/coaches.
