Complex digital objects require different forms of metadata for their proper life cycle management and use. XML is the de-facto standard for metadata descriptions, and METS and MODS are among the widely adopted XML standards-based digital library applications that facilitate interoperability and resource sharing.

Daniel Gelaw Alemneh and Mark Phillips will provide overviews of the Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) and Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS). What are these metadata standards? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the METS/MODS approach? Show up Tuesday, October 16th (for METS) and Wednesday, October 17th (for MODS) for the answers.
