PREMIS-Mapping
Mapping among the widely used metadata elements is important in order to facilitate accurate conversions among various metadata element sets. Accordingly, the UNTL preliminary crosswalk to PREservation Metadata Implementation Strategies (PREMIS) will provide simple semantic mapping. Since the work of the PREMIS Working Group goes a long way towards establishing an international open-source standard for handling meta-data, this preliminary semantic mapping will facilitate the preservation activities of the UNT Libraries.
The Preservation Metadata Implementation Strategies (PREMIS) is a working group of more than 30 international experts from libraries, museums, archives, government, and the private sector. Our own Cathy Hartman is among the active members of the working group. In May 2005, PREMIS released its comprehensive guide to core metadata for supporting the long-term preservation of digital materials. The PREMIS Data Dictionary version 2.0 was released in April 2008. We will update our documentation in light of the changes in the new version. The detailed descriptions of the UNTL metadata element set are available online at: http://www.library.unt.edu/digitalprojects/metadata/. Please note that all metadata elements listed and defined by UNTL have not been included in the crosswalks because they are not generally found in PREMIS.
