Reserve Information for Faculty
The UNT Libraries has six reserve desks which house materials selected by faculty members as required or recommended reading for their courses. These materials are course-related materials and can include books, articles, chapters of books, sample tests, homework solutions, videos, CDs, DVD, etc. Periodical volumes, reference materials, and non-circulating books cannot be placed on reserve.

Personal materials for any of the reserve desks should be reserved in person at the appropriate reserve desk.
Location of Reserve Materials
- Willis Library Reserve/Current Periodicals Reading Room, located on 1st floor of Willis Library, houses reserve items for courses in the humanities or social sciences.
- The Music Library Service Desk and the Audio Center, both located on 4th floor of Willis Library, houses reserve items for music courses.
- The Science and Technology Library Circulation Desk houses reserve items for courses in science and technology.
- The Library Collection Area, Discovery Park room M130, houses reserve items for courses in library and information sciences, engineering, computer science, materials science, and engineering technology.
- The UNT Dallas Center Circulation Desk houses video reserve items for courses taught at the Dallas Center. Other reserve material should be in electronic form.
- Regardless of the course being taught, all Media Library items on reserve (except those at the Dallas Center) are located at the service desk of the Media Library.
- Electronic Reserves are accessed through the UNT Library Catalog.
Loan Periods
Loan periods for reserve items are specified by the instructor from the following options:
- 2 hours
- 2 hours, library use only
- 1 day
- 3 days
- 7 days
- 21 days
Electronic Reserves
Instructors have the option of placing articles or chapters from books on reserve in electronic format instead of paper format. Only one option can be chosen. If materials are on electronic reserve, they cannot also be placed on reserve in paper format. If the material is copyrighted, the professor must provide a password that students will use in accessing the document. In order to view material on electronic reserves, students must enter their I.D. number, a PIN number of their choosing and the password designated by the professor.
To access Electronic Reserves -
- Go to the UNT Library Catalog
- Click on Course Reserves
- Search by Course or by instructor's name
- Click on the title needed
- Sign in with your name, your UNT ID, your PIN, and the course password. The password must be given to you by the faculty member teaching the course.
- When the above information is entered correctly, you will see the PDF for the article.
- If you have additional articles to read, use the back button to return to the Library Catalog.
- When you are finished, please exit from the browser if you are using a public PC. This is to protect your personal information.
Personal Materials
Personal material belonging to the instructor may be placed on reserve, but the Libraries are not responsible for any loss or damage to these materials. Personal materials should be taken to the appropriate reserve desk where the appropriate form will be completed.
Library Reserve Policy
The Libraries will make a single copy of a magazine article, part of a book, etc., from its collections to be placed on Reserve for a particular course. Personal material belonging to the instructor may also be placed on reserve, but the Libraries are not responsible for any loss or damage to these materials. Periodicals, non-circulating books and reference materials cannot be placed on reserve except at the discretion of the librarian.
The Libraries comply with U.S. Copyright Law. The Libraries will provide one copy of an article to be placed on reserve; the faculty member must provide additional copies and copyright permission, if necessary. The Libraries will not make copies of works intended to be consumable in the course of study or teaching (workbooks, exercises, etc.).
In order to have material on Reserve in a timely manner, it is necessary for the Libraries to have Reserve requests a minimum of two weeks prior to their initial use. Reserve material will be removed at the end of the semester unless the instructor requests renewal.
